Luqobo Makwedini, a 20-year-old South African prop for AS Béziers Hérault, died on Friday after falling ill during training.
The Pro D2 club announced the death in a statement. “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the tragic death of our young player,” it said.
Makwedini fell ill during the session at Stade de la Gayonne. He was taken to emergency services and died a few hours later.
An under-18 Springboks international, the 1.76 m, 119 kg player joined Béziers last season. He was expected to join the professional squad for the 2026-2027 season.
