Tennis world mourns death of 16-year-old Argentine prospect

Luisana Schonberger, a 16-year-old tennis player from Argentina, died in a road accident on July 12 in Eldorado, Misiones. The rising junior talent was traveling as a passenger when the vehicle crashed.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Avenida San Martin. A Volkswagen Gol driven by 20-year-old Renzo German Retamozo was struck from behind by a Toyota Corolla, causing it to veer off the road and hit a tree. Both Schonberger and the driver died at the scene, while three other passengers in the back sustained serious injuries.

A Ford Escort involved in the collision fled the scene but was later located by authorities. Courts have ordered arrests related to that vehicle as the investigation continues.

The Argentine Tennis Association expressed sorrow on social media, noting Schonberger's talent and dedication from a young age in her hometown. Her club, Eldorado Lawn Tennis, described her as an adopted daughter. The player was laid to rest on the evening of July 12, followed by cremation the next day.
