Mechanism releases smartphone mount for Steam Controller

Mechanism has launched the Basegrip accessory for Valve's Steam Controller, allowing users to attach a smartphone magnetically to the device. The mount becomes available on May 4, coinciding with the controller's purchase launch. Compatibility remains limited to Steam and the Steam Link app for now.

Valve's Steam Controller goes on sale May 4, and accessory maker Mechanism will offer its Basegrip for Steam Controller the same day. Priced at $9, or less in bundles, the Basegrip fits snugly over the controller's back, preserving access to its magnetic charging puck. It integrates with Mechanism's existing lineup of mounts, enabling smartphone attachment atop the controller to create a makeshift handheld gaming setup. Mechanism designs its products for interoperability, so the Basegrip connects to various grips and stands the company sells for handheld consoles and PCs. A phone mount lets users magnetically secure their device, pairing it with the controller for streaming PC games via the Steam Link app. However, the company notes that the controller does not yet work across all iOS or Android apps. Valve emphasizes the Steam Controller's focus on Steam and Steam Link compatibility, limiting broader mobile use until potential software updates expand support. Mechanism also announced a Steam Controller Dock, set to ship in June with an integrated charging puck for display and powering. Customers can join a waitlist now, though a final price remains undisclosed.
