New authority for transport accident investigations begins operations in July

The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the appointment of the president and six board members of the Independent Authority for the Technical Investigation of Transport Accidents. The body will begin operations this month and will take on cases such as the Adamuz rail incident.

The new entity will unify the functions of three previous commissions under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. These are the CIAF for the rail sector, the CIAIM for maritime, and the CIAIAC for civil aviation.

Gonzalo Julián Guillén Espejo-Saavedra will chair the authority. The board members include Jorge Navarecerra and José Antonio Pañero in the rail sector, María Teresa Lumbreras and Verónica Elvira Olalla in aviation, and Nuria Obiols and Juan Andrés Pérez in maritime.

The law establishing the body was approved by Congress in July 2024. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz stated that it will assume ongoing investigations, following a public consultation process and backing from the Congress Transport Commission in May.
