New concerns raised about age verification used by playstation

A new report has highlighted privacy issues with Yoti, the age verification software used by PlayStation along with Meta and TikTok. Researchers found that the tool collects more user data than needed and shares it with other parties. The findings were presented earlier this month at a major security conference.

The report titled “Papers, Please: A First Look at Age Verification on the Web” was presented on May 18 at the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy. It states that Yoti, used by 60 percent of sites requiring age checks, gathers high-resolution device details such as OS version strings, available RAM, connection type, and CPU architecture. These details are described as unnecessary for age estimation and could enable device tracking.

Users on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles are reporting a new digital rights management system that imposes a 30-day validation timer on digital purchases made from March onward. Without an internet connection after the timer expires, licenses may be revoked, according to demonstrations by modders and preservationists. Sony has not issued a statement on the matter.

The consumer rights group Stop Killing Games has joined efforts against age verification requirements in gaming and online services. It argues these measures threaten game preservation and community projects without addressing root causes of harm.
