Nintendo Switch update speeds up original eShop

Nintendo has released system update version 22.5.0 for the original Switch, introducing a faster local eShop app. The change addresses long-standing complaints about sluggish performance on the console's digital store.

The update, released on June 15, redesigns the eShop layout and makes it a native app rather than a browser-based interface. This results in quicker navigation and scrolling through game lists.

Users can now set PIN codes to access the store and saved payment methods. The eShop also matches the console's "Basic Dark" theme when selected in system settings.

Daniel Vuckovic shared video footage showing the improved speed. Kotaku's Rebekah Valentine noted the experience is much better than before, though not quite matching the Switch 2's eShop.

The patch notes also mention general stability improvements and video playback controls. This update brings the original Switch closer in line with features already available on its successor.

Nintendo announced March 25 that physical copies of Switch 2-exclusive first-party games will cost $10 more than digital versions starting in May, beginning with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book ($70 physical vs. $60 digital on the US eShop). The policy reflects differing production and distribution costs, including Switch 2 cartridge challenges, breaking from prior equal pricing.
