PSOE and Sumar block amendments seeking early elections vote

The Congress Mesa, with a PSOE and Sumar majority, rejected on Tuesday amendments from Junts and PP that sought to force a vote on calling early general elections.

The body rejected the proposals on grounds that they invade exclusive powers of the prime minister. The amendments were tabled to a PP motion and aimed to have Congress urge Pedro Sánchez to dissolve parliament.

Parliamentary sources said the ruling relied on existing case law. Ester Muñoz, PP spokesperson, described the move as arbitrary and accused Francina Armengol of working for Sánchez.

The government restated its plan to complete the term until 2027. Junts and PP confirmed they had not coordinated their initiatives.
