Salim Mvurya appoints 38-member committee for AFCON 2027 preparations

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has appointed a 38-member committee to oversee preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host. The announcement came hours after the government paid the Ksh3.9 billion AFCON hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Nicholas Musonye will chair the committee, with Hussein Mohammed as vice-chairperson.

The appointments were published in a special gazette notice dated Monday, March 30. Other members include former Inter Milan player McDonald Mariga, prominent Kenyan football administrator and former FKF CEO Lordvick Aduda, former AFC Leopards chairperson Dan Shikanda, Brigadier Titus Sokobe, June Chepkemei, and dozens more such as Evans Achoki, Osman Abdi, and Dr Doreen Odhiambo.

The LOC Secretariat will be based at the Ministry of Sports, Talanta Plaza, Upper Hill, Nairobi, headed by Antony Emmanuel Inzahuli Lung’aho for day-to-day management.

According to CS Mvurya, the committee will mobilise stakeholders, coordinate logistics, and develop the tournament roadmap. It will also oversee stadium renovations to meet CAF standards for security, seating, and pitch quality, while managing ticketing, media relations, sponsorships, transport, accommodation, and fan engagement, and promoting AFCON 2027 locally and internationally.

The LOC will receive funding from government allocations and private sector donations. Officials from co-hosting nations Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will convene next month to establish a harmonised framework for visa facilitation to ease movement for teams, officials, and fans.
