Sega president says company still values physical media culture

Sega president Shuji Utsumi stated that the company continues to value physical media while recognizing the need to strengthen digital distribution. His comments came in an interview with Famitsu. Utsumi noted the growing importance of PC gaming as a factor in the shift.

Utsumi said a digital shift is crucial for full games on consoles and PCs. He pointed to the steadily increasing proportion of people playing on PCs, including in areas where consoles are not widely available.

"We were originally a platform provider, and of course, we still value the culture of physical media," Utsumi said. "Rather than completely abandoning that, we are currently challenging ourselves to shift so that we can think about and act on the important aspects of digital media in parallel."

He added that Sega tends to think from a physical perspective and needs to become more digitally conscious and global. The remarks addressed Sega's broader business approach rather than any specific industry decisions.

Other publishers have noted similar trends, with PC having gone all-digital years ago.
