Sony has announced it will stop producing physical video game discs for PlayStation starting in January 2028. The move has prompted reactions from collectors, industry experts and developers concerned about ownership and community impacts.
Sony revealed last week that it will end production of game discs from January 2028. Developers have been assured that discs can still be ordered for titles releasing before that date.
Collectors expressed disappointment over the loss of tangible media. Saurav, a collector in India, described the decision as a stab in the back from Sony. Matt Welsh in Pennsylvania highlighted the inability to lend or display games as a key drawback.
Industry analysts noted the shift points to a digital-only PlayStation 6 expected in 2028. Experts including Chris Dring and Rhyss Elliot said the change gives Sony greater control over pricing and eliminates resale revenue.
Hideo Kojima voiced sadness about the development. He warned that a move toward streaming could limit access to games due to political or corporate decisions.
