New regulatory filings show Tesla is preparing more powerful versions of its China-made Model 3 and Model Y. The documents point to the return of a Model Y Performance variant. The changes center on a new front motor.
Filings submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology under catalogue entry 194 detail several dual-motor configurations. Tesla is replacing the existing front motor with a new unit coded TL2 rated at 176 kW.
The Model Y Performance filing pairs the 176 kW front motor with a 291 kW rear motor. It lists a top speed of 250 km/h, dimensions of 4,796 mm long and 1,611 mm tall, and staggered 21-inch tires.
Other variants cover Model 3 and standard Model Y models with the same front-motor upgrade while keeping rear motors unchanged. All listed vehicles include event data recorders and optional electronic toll collection hardware.
The filings come as Tesla seeks to strengthen its position in China, where the Model Y accounted for more than 73 percent of local deliveries in June 2026.
