Tesla Model Y tops foreign car sales in Japan

Tesla’s Model Y led foreign vehicle registrations in Japan for May 2026. The achievement marks a first for the brand in the import segment.

Tesla Japan shared the news on X. The company thanked local customers, suppliers, and shareholders for the result.

Year-to-date registrations reached 8,194 units by early June. This figure represents a 157 percent increase from the 3,178 vehicles registered in the same period last year.

The Model Y benefited from Japan’s 2026 Clean Energy Vehicle subsidy. Buyers can receive up to 1.27 million yen, or about $8,000, along with additional local incentives in cities such as Tokyo.

Tesla also offered three years of free Supercharging for Model 3 and Model Y deliveries completed by the end of June. The company operates more than 726 Supercharger stalls at 146 sites across the country.
