Tesla Full Self-Driving leads to speeding ticket in Quebec

A driver received a speeding ticket while using Tesla's Full Self-Driving system in Standard mode. The car accelerated to 78 km/h in a 50 km/h zone near Quebec.

The incident occurred this weekend when the driver activated FSD to demonstrate the system to two passengers. Within two minutes, police pulled the vehicle over after radar detection.

The user noted that Tesla removed a custom speed offset feature with the release of FSD version 14 last October. It was replaced by preset modes including Sloth, Chill, Standard, Hurry, and Mad Max.

Standard mode selected the higher speed on the road, exceeding the driver's preferred limit of about 15 km/h over the posted speed. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle and the resulting fine.

On highways the same mode maintains speeds around 111 km/h without issue, but the user now avoids FSD on lower-speed roads.

France’s transport minister has said the country will not authorize Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system as it currently stands. Philippe Tabarot cited concerns over speeding and driver attention during urban maneuvers. The decision keeps France from following the Netherlands’ earlier national approval.

A Tesla driver was recorded apparently asleep behind the wheel while traveling at roughly 100 km/h on British Columbia’s Trans-Canada Highway. The incident occurred on Sunday with two children in the vehicle. Tesla’s driver monitoring system did not intervene because the driver wore large sunglasses.

Tesla has released promotional videos that depict drivers not supervising its Full Self-Driving system, even as the company faces up to $14.5 billion in related lawsuits. The videos include one posted on May 26 showing a driver making espresso and another on June 9 filmed in Denmark where the system violated traffic laws. These clips contradict Tesla's legal argument that drivers must always supervise the technology.

Tesla released Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14.3.5 on July 13. Early users report improved awareness and courtesy in driving maneuvers along with a new camera preview feature.
