Two contractors withdraw from Chennai T3 terminal project

Two contractors have exited the T3 International Terminal project at Chennai airport after completing just 40 per cent of the work. The project now has a revised deadline of December 2026.

Two contractors responsible for interior work have withdrawn from the T3 International Terminal project at Chennai airport. The project forms part of the phase II modernisation and covers an area of 2,20,972 square metres at an estimated cost of ₹2,467 crore.

Civil works remain on track according to Airports Authority of India officials, who review progress weekly. They stated that the most challenging phase has been completed and fresh bids have already been floated to replace the departed contractors.

The original completion target was 2022, but the project has faced repeated delays partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase, known as T2, opened in 2023 while work on T3 began the following year.

Officials expressed confidence that the December 2026 deadline will be met. They noted that rising costs had made continued participation financially unviable for the two firms that left.
