Violence and mistreatment lead to closure of elderly home in Västerås

The elderly home Hagalidsgården in Västerås is closing due to serious mistreatment, including rough staff handling and shower temperature issues. The municipality took over operations in March, but problems persisted despite interventions. The decision was made at an extra meeting of the elderly committee.

In March this year, Västerås municipality took over Hagalidsgården from Attendo following reports of violence against residents. Serious issues, such as language barriers, neglect, and rough treatment, prompted staff relocations and training. However, deviation reports continued to arrive, as reported by P4 Västmanland.

At Tuesday's specially convened meeting of the elderly committee, it was decided not to continue operating the home. "It is the best we can do, even though it feels sad," says Amanda Grönlund (KD), chair of the committee. She adds: "If we had competent, trained people lining up to work here, it would have worked. But we don't have that situation."

The closure will occur in the first quarter of next year. The approximately 30 residents will be offered places at other homes, and staff will receive offers for other municipal jobs. Some employees have already left, and those deemed unsuitable for care roles can work in other areas. Staff spoken to by SVT have no objections to the decision.

The municipality emphasizes that this is a necessary step to ensure proper care.
