BYD boosts Flash Chargers to 600+ mile full charge in nine minutes

BYD has upgraded its Flash Chargers, first unveiled late last year, to deliver even faster charging: from 10% to 70% in five minutes and a full charge in about nine minutes, adding over 600 miles of range—rivaling gas pump speeds.

Building on its Flash Charging system introduced in December 2025, which added 400 km of range in five minutes, Chinese automaker BYD announced enhancements this month. The upgraded chargers now support select EV batteries reaching 70% from 10% in just five minutes and a full charge from 10% in roughly nine minutes. This provides more than 600 miles (about 965 km) of range in the time it takes to grab a coffee.

The improvements position BYD ahead in ultra-fast EV charging, though U.S. availability remains distant. Deployment continues in China, underscoring BYD's lead in EV infrastructure amid global competition.

A Geotab study analyzed 22,700 electric vehicles and found that frequent fast charging increases battery degradation to up to 3% per year. Despite this, battery life remains long, with capacity preserved between 80% and 85% after eight years. Factors like climate and usage habits influence wear.

Tesla's Supercharging network in the United States has surpassed 3,000 stations. This milestone reflects a roughly 20% expansion since the start of 2025.
