On Monday night (19/1), Rio de Janeiro councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) announced on social media that he would leave Santa Catarina to join the 'freedom walk' promoted by federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG). The event started in Paracatu, northern Minas Gerais, and heads along BR-040 to Brasília, covering over 200 km – about 240 km according to some estimates. Arrival is set for Sunday (25/1), when Nikolas expects a demonstration in the federal capital.
The mobilization protests the imprisonment of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to 27 years and 3 months in prison, and the legal situation of those jailed in connection with the January 8, 2023 coup-like acts in Brasília. After a few hours of walking, Nikolas Ferreira shared images of his feet and reported a headache but continued the route near the Minas Gerais-Goiás border.
In addition to Carlos Bolsonaro, confirmed participants include federal deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), who already met Nikolas in Minas Gerais and posted a video of their hug; Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO); Zé Trovão (PL-SC); Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ); and councilors Lucas Pavanato (PL-SP) and Fernando Holiday (PL-SP). Other politicians also promise to join the route this week. Nikolas described the initiative in an open letter as not a 'silver bullet,' but a gesture of solidarity.
