Carlos Bolsonaro announces participation in Nikolas Ferreira's walk

Councilor Carlos Bolsonaro announced he will join the freedom walk organized by Deputy Nikolas Ferreira, which goes from Paracatu (MG) to Brasília protesting the imprisonment of Jair Bolsonaro and those involved in the January 8, 2023 events. The mobilization, about 200 km long, started on Monday (19/1) and is expected to arrive in the capital on Sunday (25/1). Several other PL politicians promise to join the event.

On Monday night (19/1), Rio de Janeiro councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) announced on social media that he would leave Santa Catarina to join the 'freedom walk' promoted by federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG). The event started in Paracatu, northern Minas Gerais, and heads along BR-040 to Brasília, covering over 200 km – about 240 km according to some estimates. Arrival is set for Sunday (25/1), when Nikolas expects a demonstration in the federal capital.

The mobilization protests the imprisonment of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to 27 years and 3 months in prison, and the legal situation of those jailed in connection with the January 8, 2023 coup-like acts in Brasília. After a few hours of walking, Nikolas Ferreira shared images of his feet and reported a headache but continued the route near the Minas Gerais-Goiás border.

In addition to Carlos Bolsonaro, confirmed participants include federal deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), who already met Nikolas in Minas Gerais and posted a video of their hug; Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO); Zé Trovão (PL-SC); Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ); and councilors Lucas Pavanato (PL-SP) and Fernando Holiday (PL-SP). Other politicians also promise to join the route this week. Nikolas described the initiative in an open letter as not a 'silver bullet,' but a gesture of solidarity.

The liberty walk led by deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) completed its sixth day on January 24, approaching Brasília and causing disruptions on BR-040 traffic and BRT in Santa Maria (DF). The event, protesting STF decisions and supporting former president Jair Bolsonaro, will culminate in a rally at Praça do Cruzeiro on January 25. Security measures, including grates at the Palácio do Planalto, were implemented despite the rally's distance.

Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira completed a 240 km walk to Brasília in support of Jair Bolsonaro's freedom, but the event at Praça do Cruzeiro was overshadowed by a lightning strike that injured dozens of supporters. At least 72 people received treatment, with 30 sent to hospitals. Ferreira visited the injured and downplayed the incident as natural.

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas highlighted the march led by Deputy Nikolas Ferreira as a courageous movement that gathered 18,000 people in Brasília. The bolsonarista act solidified Ferreira as a national PL electoral arm for the 2026 elections. Lula's government aides downplay the mobilization, linking it to distractions from scandals.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro was preventively arrested by the Federal Police on Saturday (22) in Brasília after tampering with his ankle monitor and with flight risk identified by STF Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The decision comes at the end of the trial for the 2022 coup attempt. Allies reacted with surprise, while the Lula government sees political wear on bolsonarism.

Left leaders at the Avenida Paulista rally divided over direct confrontation with Congress and insults to Chamber President Hugo Motta. Most deputies and ministers viewed the strategy as counterproductive, while activists were more vehement. The protest targeted the vote on a bill reducing penalties for coup plotters.

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas canceled a planned visit to former President Jair Bolsonaro in prison on Thursday (22) to avoid what allies call a 'kiss of death'. The decision followed statements by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro about his presidential candidacy and expected support for it. The visit would have been the first since Flávio's announcement as Jair's candidate against Lula.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), a declared presidential candidate for 2026, posted a video on Saturday (17) urging unity among right-wing leaders following recent public spats. He praised former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro and São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, along with other allied governors. Flávio emphasized the need for a shared focus against the Lula government, without internal attacks.
