Ethiopian Airlines leases new ATR 72-600 turboprops to Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines has leased two new ATR 72-600 turboprops to Air Congo, the flag carrier of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in which it holds a 49 percent stake. The aircraft, fitted with the latest engines, are set to begin operations in February 2026, introducing this model to the DRC for the first time. The deal was announced at the Dubai Airshow.

Ethiopian Airlines, holding a 49 percent stake in Air Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo's national carrier, has leased two brand-new ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft to the airline. These planes, powered by advanced engines, will commence service in February 2026, representing the debut of this aircraft type in the DRC. The agreement revives ATR operations in the country after a 30-year absence and was revealed during the ongoing Dubai Airshow.

This development builds on a July 2024 pact to set up ATR maintenance facilities in the capital, aiming to establish Ethiopian's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations as a key regional center for the Franco-Italian manufacturer's aircraft. Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the lease as an element of broader initiatives to provide African airlines with affordable regional links. "It is part of a wider effort to offer African carriers cost-effective regional connectivity," Tasew stated.

Air Congo's CEO, Mesfin Biru Weldegeorgis, highlighted the planes' ability to access isolated runways, crucial given the DRC's challenging terrain. ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, pointing to the increasing adoption of the company's aircraft in Africa owing to their reduced operating expenses and fit for developing economies. The arrangement highlights Ethiopian Airlines' growing influence in fostering air connectivity within Africa and aiding allied carriers as part of its Vision 2035 plan.
