A 70-year-old man in Seminole County, Florida, faces felony charges after allegedly choking a 13-year-old boy and throwing the teen's phone into a lake. The incident occurred in the man's backyard on June 29.
Kyle Riva was charged with third-degree battery by strangulation, third-degree robbery by sudden snatching, and first-degree misdemeanor property damage. Court records show he appeared before a judge on June 30 and is no longer in custody.
The confrontation began around 7:10 p.m. when two boys, ages 12 and 13, walked through Riva's property on Tigua Island Court. His wife asked them to leave, after which the 13-year-old reportedly cursed. Riva then emerged from the home and approached the older boy.
According to the arrest report, Riva grabbed the boy by the neck and squeezed before seizing the phone and throwing it into Lake Antigua. The teen sustained visible bruises on his throat. The boys returned home and contacted police at their father's urging.
Riva is scheduled to be arraigned on August 25.
