Gas leak in Manaus affects 414 people and triggers fines

A styrene monomer leak at the Innova plant in Manaus sent 414 people to hospitals since Wednesday. The city declared a state of alert and fined the company.

The incident occurred late afternoon on July 15 at the Innova unit in the Industrial District. The company stated that a temperature rise released vapors, but safety systems contained the situation and there are no further emissions.

The Municipal Health Secretariat recorded 200 treatments at private hospitals, 157 at public emergency services and 57 at municipal units by Friday. Most patients had mild symptoms and were discharged, but two remained hospitalized, one in intensive care.

The city applied fines totaling R$ 9.9 million for air, soil and water pollution. IPAAM applied an additional R$ 12.5 million fine. Innova disputed the existence of tank cracks, while the city reported identification by drones.

Firefighters continue cooling the tank. A 300-meter area around remains isolated and ten schools suspended classes preventively. One death is under investigation, with no confirmed direct link to the leak.
