A resident of Hong Kong's fire-ravaged Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po reported that drawers and boxes in her flat appeared ransacked, prompting a police probe and rekindling burglary fears in the sealed complex. The incident came to light after a government social worker sent her a photo on Monday. Police inspected the flat on Tuesday morning.
A resident surnamed Lee of Wang Cheong House at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po said a drawer in her flat had been pulled out and boxes containing cash and jewellery opened. She raised concerns with police early Tuesday after receiving a photo of her flat from a government social worker the day before, which showed signs of rummaging.
Police initially asked her family to report any missing items after checking the flat during their assigned pack-up slot next week. Officers were later deployed to inspect the unit Tuesday morning. “Police dispatched officers to the flat for follow-up action on Tuesday morning, and found cash, jewellery and other items inside. We are awaiting confirmation from the person who reported the case,” a force spokesman said.
Lee confirmed the drawer in her sister’s room had been rummaged through, but no break-in was evident elsewhere. “Most of the cash stored in other spots in the flat has been recovered,” she said.
The estate, sealed after a recent fire, has seen burglary fears resurface with this incident under police investigation.
