The Kenya Forest Service will construct 60 housing units at 17 forest stations nationwide. The two- and three-bedroom homes aim to improve living conditions for approximately 6,000 employees.
The Kenya Forest Service announced the plan on June 17 after a meeting with officials from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development. Deputy Director Isack Wekesa chaired the session, which also included Architect Hassan Yusuf.
The units form part of efforts to ease a housing shortage made worse by the recent recruitment of 2,700 new rangers. KFS already completed 14 ranger houses at Karura Forest headquarters along with a three-kilometre tarmacked road.
The project will be developed jointly with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development. It aligns with the national Affordable Housing Programme that includes a three per cent salary deduction for civil servants.
