LPDP responds to viral Tyas's pride in children's foreign citizenship

Dwi Sasetyaningtyas, known as Tyas and an LPDP alumni, sparked controversy by stating her children have become foreign citizens in the UK. LPDP expressed regret over her remarks, deeming them unreflective of the institution's values. Tyas has since apologized for her poor word choice, stemming from personal frustration.

The controversy began with Tyas's Instagram post on February 21, 2026, where she wrote, “enough, only I am WNI, not my children.” The statement drew public backlash for seemingly belittling Indonesian national identity, especially since Tyas and her husband are alumni of the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), funded by the state.

LPDP issued an official response the same day, stating, “LPDP regrets the social media polemic triggered by the actions of one alumnus, Ms. DS. Such actions do not reflect the integrity, ethics, and professionalism instilled by LPDP in all scholarship recipients.” The agency reiterated alumni obligations: twice the study duration plus one year. For Tyas, who completed her master's on August 31, 2017, over two years, this meant five years of contribution in Indonesia, which she has fulfilled. Thus, LPDP no longer has any legal ties with her.

LPDP plans to communicate with Tyas to encourage wiser social media use. Regarding her husband, LPDP is conducting an internal review; if obligations are unmet, clarification and action will follow per regulations.

Tyas responded with an apology on Instagram @sasetyaningtyas, acknowledging, “The statement arose entirely from my personal disappointment, fatigue, and frustration as an Indonesian citizen toward various conditions I have experienced.” She regretted the impact and pledged greater caution in public communication.
