Minions & Monsters leads global box office with $146 million weekend

Illumination and Universal's Minions & Monsters topped the global box office over the July 4 holiday weekend. The film earned $146.4 million across 72 territories, bringing its running total to $159.8 million.

Overseas markets delivered $85 million while the United States generated a franchise-low $61.4 million in its five-day opening. The $85 million production cost positions the film for profitability through merchandise and long-term earnings despite the domestic result.

Universal domestic distribution boss Jim Orr highlighted the film's appeal. "Illumination once again provides global audiences with a film that audiences are embracing," he said. "Minions & Monsters debuts atop the domestic box office on this holiday weekend with reaction scores that once again validate the charm, wit and heart of this most incredible franchise."

China led international results with $16.4 million. Germany followed with $6.4 million, the United Kingdom and Ireland opened to $5.9 million, and Mexico grossed $5.6 million. Toy Story 5 placed second worldwide with a $100 million third weekend and a $764.3 million global total.
