Sega uncovers early Sonic Adventure concept art

Sega has revealed never-before-seen concept art for Sonic Adventure from its archives. The artwork depicts a markedly different style for the game, featuring a more traditional Sonic design amid green fields and other varied environments. The official Sonic social media account shared the images ahead of the franchise's 35th anniversary.

The Sega Dreamcast launch featured Sonic Adventure prominently, introducing a new aesthetic for the blue hedgehog with elongated limbs and a modern urban setting. As Sonic approaches its 35th birthday, Sega dug into its archives and posted early concept art on official social channels. “Get a load of this early concept art for Sonic Adventure we found in our archives,” the Sonic the Hedgehog account stated on May 1, 2026. The thread showcases a squat Sonic overlooking vast green fields with Ghibli-inspired creatures, Eggman flying ships, Amy Rose in an eerie castle, and humans with Osamu Tezuka-like features—contrasting sharply with the final game's proportions and millennium vibe. These designs align more closely with Sonic CD's style than the finished Sonic Adventure. Sega provided no detailed context, but the art may predate art director Kazuyuki Hoshino's involvement and possibly originated during Sega Saturn considerations before shifting to Dreamcast hardware. The project grew into one of Sega's largest, involving 100 developers to realize Sonic's 3D debut. Sonic Adventure's distinctive look, including a vocalized Sonic and Robotnik's rave attire, has defined the series for over 25 years. Sega's approach ties the franchise to contemporary trends, differing from Nintendo's timeless style.
