Jannik Sinner defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in a five-set first-round match at Wimbledon on June 29 after suffering a bloody fall during the third set. The world No. 1 refused medical attention and rallied to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Sinner dropped the opening set before leveling the match. In the third set he slipped while returning serve and cut his right foot, drawing blood that was visible on his shoe. He declined a medical timeout to avoid disrupting the rhythm of play.
The Serb took the third set in a tiebreak but Sinner dominated the final two sets. He secured a double break in the fourth and broke again in the sixth game of the fifth to close out the victory.
After the match Sinner said the injury was minor. “It’s just a nail,” he explained. “I didn’t want to disturb Miomir. I think we both had a good rhythm.” He will face Nuno Borges in the second round.
