Tesla ramps up hiring for cybercab production in austin

Tesla is hiring at least 30 new positions in Austin for the production of its Cybercab robotaxi. The roles focus on manufacturing at the Gigafactory near the airport, with volume production slated for 2026. CEO Elon Musk envisions rapid assembly, potentially producing a vehicle every five seconds.

Tesla, the Austin-based automaker, has posted at least 30 new job openings tied to the production of its highly anticipated two-seater Cybercab robotaxi. Most positions emphasize manufacturing, including technicians for drive units, battery packs, and assembly lines. All roles are located in Austin, indicating that production will occur at Tesla's Gigafactory near the airport.

This hiring push follows CEO Elon Musk's announcement to investors that the company will begin 'volume production' of the autonomous vehicle in 2026. Tesla has been preparing for Cybercab output using an 'unboxed' manufacturing system, in which major vehicle parts are built in parallel before final assembly. A report from the Austin American-Statesman notes that Tesla aims for an annual production rate of 2 million units. Musk has claimed the process will exceed standard car manufacturing speeds, potentially yielding a Cybercab every five seconds.

The Cybercab is designed without control pedals or a steering wheel, functioning as a fully autonomous vehicle. However, recent statements from company officials suggest it may include a steering wheel and pedals to broaden its appeal. Earlier this year, Tesla launched its Robotaxi ride-hailing service in Austin amid safety concerns with its self-driving technology. The service currently includes safety monitors in the front passenger seat, which Musk said will be removed by the end of 2025.
