Uppsala's horse manure mediation service returns

Uppsala municipality relaunches its horse manure mediation service following last year's success. Hundreds of growers then collected free manure from more than 20 horse farms. The service matches growers with farms using a digital map.

Last year's launch of Uppsala's horse manure mediation service was a hit. Hundreds of growers fetched manure from more than 20 participating horse farms. Ahead of the 2026 growing season, farms are opening their doors again to provide free manure for kitchen gardens, plantings, and flower beds. The service, which began in 2025, connects growers with local horse farms through a digital map displaying participating sites, addresses, and contact details. The map is available at uppsala.se/hastgodselformedlingen. Horse farms and riding schools can register for free to dispose of manure sustainably. Benefits include local resource use, reduced nutrient leaching, and lower reliance on chemical fertilizers. Anna Jonson, sustainability developer at Lurbo ridklubb, stated: “The interest has been great, from both private and hobby growers. We also had a visit from Barnombudet, which works with schools in Gränby and Gottsunda on the Växer tillsammans project. It feels fantastic that our riding school's manure is being put to good use, contributing to sustainable farming and reduced nutrient leakage. We've also had many nice meetings and valuable knowledge exchange.”
