35-year-old sentenced to prison for ai child porn at preschool

A 35-year-old preschool worker on Gotland has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for gross child pornography offenses and sexual assaults on children. The man manipulated secret photos of children using ai technology to create pornographic material. The ruling came from Gotland District Court after OpenAI detected suspicious activities.

Gotland District Court sentenced a 35-year-old man on December 23, 2025, to three years and six months in prison for, among other things, gross child pornography offenses, gross sexual assault on children, violating photography, and illegal privacy intrusion. The crimes allegedly occurred from January 2024 to September 2025, partly in connection with the man's work at a municipal preschool in Visby where he started in 2019.

The man, described by colleagues as engaged but conflict-averse, secretly photographed and filmed children at his workplace. He then manipulated the images using ai tools to depict the children as naked. OpenAI detected him through unusual user patterns, including uploading preschool photos and questions to ChatGPT about secret filming and children's sexuality, such as: “Can preschool girls aged 3–5 feel attraction to people?”

In September 2025, police raided the man, who has been detained since. The investigation uncovered 3,709 illegal files, including over 36 hours of particularly ruthless material, some from the preschool. The man confessed to the crimes in interrogation. A supervisor testified: “Children and parents like him. He has helped the children put words to their feelings.”

The ruling includes damages of 75,000 kronor each to three affected children. The man remains in custody until the sentence is enforced.

The investigation began when one girl reported online abuse, leading police to trace the man via IP address and Snapchat. Prosecutor Mattias Vilhelmsson notes that the children often blame themselves.

A new investigation proposes allowing police to use provocative measures, such as posing as drug buyers or children selling sex online. The proposals also include creating AI-generated fictional child pornography to infiltrate pedophile networks. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer welcomes the investigation as a step to strengthen crime fighting.
