The epicenter was located about 162 kilometers east of the Guadeloupean island of Désirade, at a depth of around ten kilometers. The University of the West Indies recorded a magnitude of 6.7, placing the epicenter 222 kilometers east of Pointe-à-Pitre, the nearest major city in Guadeloupe.

Several aftershocks followed, including one of magnitude 6 and another of 5.4, in the same area, as reported by the USGS. The tremors were felt in Guadeloupe, Martinique, and several other Caribbean islands. Authorities reported no damage or injuries immediately. A tsunami alert was issued by officials after the initial shock but was quickly lifted. According to an Agence France-Presse journalist, several buildings in Fort-de-France, Martinique, were evacuated.

The Caribbean region is known for its high seismic activity, with tremors regularly felt by residents. For context, a magnitude 7 earthquake in Haiti in January 2010 killed over 200,000 people and left Port-au-Prince in ruins.
