Ludvig Åberg, the 26-year-old from Eslöv, showed marked improvement in the second round of the US Masters at Augusta National. After Thursday's 74, he carded 70 strokes on Friday, two under par, with five birdies and three bogeys. He finished with a birdie on the 18th hole despite visiting the fairway bunker.
Åberg started the day in tied 40th place but climbed to tied 22nd by the end of his round. At that point, last year's winner Rory McIlroy held a two-shot lead after seven holes of his second round, with Åberg seven shots back at even par overall.
"Hopefully we can put some pressure on, tighten the gap to the leaders a bit", Åberg said afterward. He described his play as more stable than the scorecard suggested, amid blazing sun and 26 degrees Celsius. He called the bogeys on holes 6, 7, and 17 "silly", including a three-putt on 17.
Alex Norén was at +6 after six holes total and is focusing on making the cut, projected at +3 or +4. Åberg needs two strong days to contend for victory.
