Ammonia gas removal at Thiruvallur factory continues

The operation to remove ammonia gas from a seafood processing unit in Thiruvallur district will continue on Monday following a leak that killed 18 workers last month.

The pumping out of ammonia gas from St. Peter and Paul Pvt. Ltd. at Kannigaipair will proceed under the same safety measures used over the weekend. Collector S. Kavitha stated that the work would go on until the gas is fully cleared.

Teams of experts, including staff from ammonia-using industries, carried out the removal in liquefied form between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Medical teams, ambulances, police, and Fire and Rescue Services personnel remain on standby.

Daytime operations are preferred because ammonia spreads more rapidly at night when temperatures drop. The original leak occurred on June 21.
