Bathing ban remains at Ribersborg after Malmö sewage leak

A sewage leak in Malmö's canal has led to bathing bans at several popular spots, though not everywhere. Bacteria levels are dropping according to samples.

On May 5, a sewage pipe burst in central Malmö, causing untreated wastewater to flow into the canal. VA Syd has since pumped in fresh water to dilute the contaminants.

A bathing ban remains in effect at Ribersborgs kallbadhus, Scaniabadet and Sundspromenaden. At Sibbarps kallbadhus it is open for swimming, even though no new samples have been taken there since the leak.

Thomas Hulgaard Persson at VA Syd says bacteria levels are decreasing but environmental consequences remain unclear. Samples from May 11 show levels dropping quickly at the bathing sites.

The City of Johannesburg’s wastewater treatment system is deteriorating significantly, with half of its plants in critical condition according to the 2025 Green Drop Report. Released on 31 March by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the report gives the metro an overall score of 48.8%, down from 91% in 2011. Failing plants are releasing poorly treated sewage into rivers, posing risks to public health and the environment.
