Aroldis Chapman sets all-time reliever strikeout record

Aroldis Chapman became Major League Baseball's all-time leader in strikeouts by a relief pitcher on Friday night. The Boston Red Sox closer recorded his 1,364th strikeout to surpass Hoyt Wilhelm's mark.

The 38-year-old left-hander struck out the Los Angeles Angels' Denzer Guzman to open the ninth inning at Angel Stadium. Chapman then induced a game-ending double play to secure a 5-2 victory and his 17th save of the season.

Chapman had tied the record two days earlier at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees. He reflected on the achievement through an interpreter, saying he felt happy and proud while staying focused on his daily work.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy noted the team's anticipation of the milestone. Teammates paused postgame activities to watch a highlight reel of Chapman's 16-year career.

Rookie starter Jake Bennett supported the effort with 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs. Chapman said the historic ball will join his collection of important saves.
