Arthur Fery defeats Zizou Bergs at Wimbledon

British wildcard Arthur Fery advanced to the Wimbledon round of 16 after beating Zizou Bergs in a five-set match on July 4.

Fery recorded a 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory in a contest that lasted four hours and 38 minutes. The win marked his first five-set triumph and the longest match of his career.

Bergs voiced frustration during the fifth set, telling the chair umpire that Fery repeatedly failed to apologize after shots clipped the net cord. “He keeps hitting the net and he keeps shouting afterwards straight ‘yeah.’ It’s unbelievable,” Bergs said. “It’s zero fair play. How many times he hits the net and never says he’s sorry.”

Fery also dealt with three nosebleeds that required medical timeouts. The 23-year-old received strong support from the Court 18 crowd and is set to enter the top 100 for the first time, projected to reach No. 91 in the live rankings.

Fery next faces the winner of the match between Matteo Berrettini and Grigor Dimitrov.
