The Houston Astros signed 32-year-old outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. on Thursday to address offensive production from their outfield.
Wade opted out of his Triple-A deal with Charlotte on Monday and joined the Astros immediately. He started in left field and batted fifth during Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Daikin Park. The team also promoted catcher Collin Price for his major league debut and optioned rookie Zach Cole to Triple-A Sugar Land. Catchers César Salazar and outfielder Rhylan Thomas were designated for assignment. Astros manager Joe Espada said the club had shown interest in Wade since the offseason. Wade brings a career .236/.341/.390 slash line and a low strikeout rate. Wade expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said he aims to get on base and help the lineup.
