Basic goods prices may rise slightly as manufacturers cite rising costs

Filipino consumers may soon face slight price increases for some basic goods as manufacturers grapple with rising fuel and logistics costs tied to the Middle East conflict.

The Department of Trade and Industry secured commitments from manufacturers to keep prices of basic necessities and prime commodities unchanged until May 10. Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said 68% of monitored products have maintained stable prices.

Roque noted that proposed adjustments cover selected brands and stock keeping units such as canned sardines, canned meat products, some processed milk items, and selected instant noodle brands. Increases for milk products remain below 10%.

Manufacturers cited higher fuel and logistics expenses as the main reasons, particularly for sardines where fishing and transport operations are affected. The DTI is reviewing the petitions and holding consultations before finalizing any updated suggested retail price list.

Malacañang assured the public on Tuesday, March 10, that the Philippines has sufficient supplies of fuel and basic commodities despite rising global oil prices due to the ongoing Middle East crisis. There is no reason for panic buying, the Palace said. Government agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure market stability.

Fuel prices in the Philippines are set to surge next week due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to the Department of Energy. Minimum increases are estimated at P19 per liter for diesel, P9 for gasoline, and P31 for kerosene, though diesel could reach P90 per liter without staggered hikes. The DOE has warned against hoarding and price manipulation.

Fuel prices in the Philippines are expected to decline again this week, though on a smaller scale, according to Department of Energy estimates. Diesel could fall by P8 to P10 per liter, gasoline by around P0.40 per liter or rise up to P1 per liter, and kerosene by P11 per liter.

MANILA, Philippines — The transport strike entered its fourth week as drivers’ groups intensified calls for a rollback in fuel prices. At the current world market rate, fuel prices should range from P70 to P75 per liter, said Manibela chairperson Mar Valbuena.

Oil companies raised fuel prices again on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, with diesel hikes up to P19.80 per liter. The increases stem from ongoing US-Iran tensions and global oil supply disruptions. This marks the 13th to 15th consecutive weekly rise.
