Bonhoeffer descendant damages AfD wreath at Stauffenberg memorial

An incident occurred at the July 20 memorial event in Berlin's Bendlerblock. Tobias Korenke, a great-nephew of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, attempted to remove an AfD wreath and damaged it in the process.

The federal government held its July 20, 2026 memorial ceremony for the conspirators around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg at the Bendlerblock. Korenke intervened during the event.

He told DPA: “Many descendants, and I am one of them, feel real anger when we see the AfD laying wreaths here. We will not accept that.” Security staff separated those involved.

The AfD parliamentary group had provided the wreath. Götz Frömming, head of the group’s history working group, confirmed the party’s invitation to the ceremony.

Federal Family Minister Karin Prien delivered the main speech. Jens-Christian Wagner, director of the Buchenwald memorial, called the AfD wreath-laying an affront to the victims.
