Report exposes Stasi contacts of AfD lawmakers in Brandenburg

A commission of the Brandenburg state parliament has uncovered contacts of four AfD politicians with the GDR's state security service. The individuals involved were young when they had these connections.

The commission published the results of its review this week. Accordingly, four out of 30 AfD members stood out due to contacts with the state security service.

Falk Janke and Peter Drenske completed their military service in the Felix Dzerzhinsky Guard Regiment. Roman Kuffert was an unofficial collaborator under the code name Atze for about four weeks in 1979. Jean-René Adam collected information on young people under the code name Hubert.

The AfD presents itself as the heir to the peaceful revolution of 1989. The commission found that the contacts of those named did not lead to serious burdens.

Following a partial legal victory for the AfD in court, Germany's Federal Interior Ministry is reviewing a domestic intelligence expert opinion on classifying the party as right-wing extremist. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced an in-depth examination that was not conducted under his predecessor Nancy Faeser. The Cologne Administrative Court has temporarily suspended the classification.

Lower Saxony's constitutional protection agency has classified the AfD state branch as confirmed right-wing extremist, the first such case in western Germany. Interior Minister Daniela Behrens justified this by citing the threat of right-wing extremism to society. The party has announced it will challenge the decision in court.

Reiner Haseloff, former Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt, attributed the AfD's strength to distrust in established parties in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung. He warned of the consequences of a potential AfD government after the state election on September 6. A coalition with the AfD is out of the question for the CDU, as it aims to destroy the party.

At the AfD party congress in Marl, Martin Vincentz defended his position as NRW state chairman with 54.7 percent of the votes. The moderate politician prevailed in a bitter internal power struggle against candidates from the radical wing. The narrow election has implications for the state executive board and the federal party.
