China's national observatory issued its highest-level red alert for rainstorms on Saturday as Typhoon Bavi was expected to make landfall along the eastern coast early Sunday.
The National Meteorological Center warned of heavy to extreme rainfall across multiple regions including Zhejiang, northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, southern Anhui, and parts of Beijing and Hebei. Maximum accumulated rainfall could reach 250 to 500 mm in parts of eastern and southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian, with up to 250 to 800 mm possible in central and northern Taiwan Island.
In Shanghai, authorities raised the typhoon warning to yellow and imposed speed limits on highways and select subway lines. Ferry services were cancelled, dozens of events postponed, and Shanghai Disney Resort delayed its Sunday opening. Airlines including China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, and Juneyao cancelled hundreds of flights serving Shanghai and nearby provinces.
