Complaint against Thierry Mariani for inciting housing discrimination

The association La Maison des potes has filed a complaint against Thierry Mariani, RN candidate for Paris mayor, over his pledge to introduce national priority in social housing access. The move aims to challenge a breach of equality laws. The case echoes prior legal issues involving the RN party.

Thierry Mariani, a European Parliament member and Rassemblement national (RN) candidate for Paris mayor, is the target of a complaint from the association La Maison des potes for "inciting housing discrimination." Filed recently with the Paris prosecutor's office, the action targets Mariani's campaign promise to establish "national priority" in housing access in the capital. His campaign website still displayed on Friday morning: "Instaurer la priorité nationale" above "guarantee Parisians and workers access to social housing."

The association contends that this pledge explicitly urges candidates on his list to base municipal policy on nationality criteria, which is prohibited by law. Lawyer Jérôme Karsenti, representing the complainant, told AFP: "This is a clear violation of the law and the equality principle enshrined in the Constitution. Such promises undermine the rule of law."

The case follows previous legal challenges for the RN. In September 2024, the Nanterre court acquitted three former or current Front national (now RN) figures, including Hénin-Beaumont mayor Steeve Briois and ex-national secretary Sophie Montel, in a matter involving the "FN elected official's guide." Published before the 2014 municipal elections, the guide advised applying "national priority" to social housing. Prosecutors had sought six months' suspended prison and a 10,000-euro fine against some defendants, but the court found insufficient evidence of their personal involvement in its publication. Marie-Thérèse Costa-Fesenbeck was also acquitted due to lack of proof.

La Maison des potes had initiated that earlier complaint, highlighting a pattern in the party's legal troubles on this issue.

In Marseille, the submission of electoral lists by outgoing mayor Benoît Payan has sparked tensions within his left-wing majority, with sidelined deputies denouncing brutal decisions. Meanwhile, RN candidate Franck Allisio, polling at 34% of voting intentions, presented priority measures including an 'anti-thugs pass' for parks and beaches. These developments come two weeks before the first round of the 2026 municipal elections.

On day six of the Paris appeal trial over alleged misuse of EU funds by Rassemblement National (RN) parliamentary assistants, Perpignan mayor Louis Aliot invoked 'great disorder' on January 22, 2026, to explain hiring militant Laurent Salles without an interview. This follows Marine Le Pen's earlier testimony, as covered in our ongoing series.

With less than two months until the municipal elections, Jordan Bardella, president of the Rassemblement National, has revealed quantified ambitions for his party, estimating it could win several dozen communes. Marseille is highlighted as the main target, with candidate Franck Allisio neck-and-neck with incumbent mayor Benoît Payan in polls.

Political scientist Emilien Houard-Vial deems the Républicains' (LR) ideological radicalization strategy a losing bet ahead of the 2026 municipal and 2027 presidential elections. In an interview with Le Monde, he examines the call for a « cordon sanitaire » around La France insoumise (LFI) made by Bruno Retailleau following the death of a nationalist militant. This approach, drawing on Rassemblement national (RN) themes, risks diluting the party's identity.

One week before the first round of Paris municipals on March 15, Jean-Luc Mélenchon supported LFI candidate Sophia Chikirou at her final rally, targeting socialist rival Emmanuel Grégoire. Right-wing candidate Rachida Dati urges voters not to split their votes to enable change. Centrist Pierre-Yves Bournazel persists with his independent run amid tensions.

In the historically Gaullist Cantal, a stronghold of Georges Pompidou, a young Rassemblement national (RN) candidate launches the party's first municipal list for the 2026 elections in Saint-Georges. At 22 years old, Cindy Rodier aims to carry the voice of the forgotten in this rural commune of 1200 inhabitants. Recent election results reveal a significant reservoir of nationalist votes in the area.

In an interview with Le Monde, specialists Nicolas Lebourg and Baptiste Roger-Lacan analyze the repercussions of the appeal trial of Front national assistants on Marine Le Pen's political future. They note that the Rassemblement national (RN) uses this case to strengthen its victim narrative against the justice system. This context fits into a global wave of the extreme right, explored in a special issue of the newspaper.
