Creators discuss expanding role in cinema at Cannes summit

The Marché du Film hosted its first Creator Economy Summit in Cannes on May 17, bringing together film producers and digital creators to examine how online content makers are entering the movie industry.

Film producer Serge Hayat told attendees that the question of whether content creators belong in cinema is settled. “The ship has sailed,” he said, noting they are already influencing production and distribution methods. mk2 executive Elisha Karmitz described the company’s YouTube Ciné-Club label, launched in 2023, as a way to draw younger viewers back to theaters after the pandemic reduced Gen Z cinema attendance.
