Sealing of illegal bed-and-breakfast facilities in Delhi after the June 3 Hauz Rani fire has left many patients and their families struggling to find affordable accommodation near hospitals.
The June 3 fire in Hauz Rani claimed 23 lives and prompted inspections of 705 properties across 13 revenue districts starting June 5. Authorities carried out 212 sealing and demolition actions against 198 illegal properties as of June 12, citing violations of fire safety norms and missing no-objection certificates.
Patients arriving for treatment have faced higher costs and greater distances. Thomas Berhana, 41, who came from Ethiopia, said the family shifted to a hotel in Jangpura and now pays almost double. Mohammed from Sudan plans to move to a rented room next week despite the higher rent.
Local accounts highlight the role these accommodations played for medical travellers from countries including Nigeria, Sudan, and Bangladesh. A pharmacist in Hauz Rani noted that many regular customers have left the area following the enforcement actions.
