Police and excise officials in Ernakulam have increased anti-drug measures around schools ahead of the new academic year.
With schools set to reopen in days, the police and Excise departments have launched coordinated efforts. The Excise department started a special drive called Operation Thunder. Police are preparing surveillance around educational institutions.
District Police Chief Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said preliminary steps had been taken with school protection groups and parents. Schools were told to clear premises of tobacco products and similar items.
District Police Chief K.S. Sudarshan warned of strict action against those selling tobacco near campuses. Police plan to monitor history-sheeters and focus on known supply routes.
The Excise Anti-Narcotics Special Squad seized 18 kg of suspected ganja from a house at Panambukad near Vallarpadam. The raid was part of Operation Thunder led by Inspector Arun D.S. The accused Sabu escaped during the operation.
