Ethiopia earns over 400 million dollars from horticulture exports

Ethiopia earned 408.2 million dollars by exporting 236,415 tons of horticulture products over the past 10 months. Agriculture Minister Adisu Arega announced the revenue during a visit to production sites.

Addis Ababa, May 12, 2018 (FMC). The minister visited banana clusters and lemon production in Adami Tulu Gido Kombolecha Woreda of East Shewa Zone as well as flower production in Batu town.

Adisu Arega noted that high attention is being given to the horticulture sector. He said the government aims to earn 600 million dollars from the sector this year after securing 408.2 million dollars in the past 10 months. A national avocado development program has been established to boost output.

The horticulture sector plays a key role beyond ensuring citizens' food security. It supplies raw materials to factories, creates jobs and increases foreign currency earnings. The focus aligns with the agriculture sector's 10-year master plan.
