Ethiopia's national election board annuls decision on contested districts

Ethiopia's National Election Board has annulled a decision concerning election districts under the control of the Amhara and Tigray regional governments. This annulment follows a recommendation from the House of the Federation, addressing territorial disputes between the two regions.

The decision was made in Addis Ababa and reported by Fana Media Corporation on February 16, 2018. The National Election Board of Ethiopia is preparing to extend voter registration starting from Tir 22, 2018, based on the timetable for the upcoming general elections, and will publicly announce the details of the affected election districts and polling stations.

In a letter dated Tir 25, 2018, the House of the Federation recommended to the Board that for the five contested election districts—Humera, Adiremets, Korem Afla, Telemna, and Raya Alamata—which are disputed between the Tigray and Amhara regional states and currently outside Tigray's control, elections for the House of the Federation should be conducted directly among the residents. The regional council elections in these areas are to be postponed until the constitutional territorial issue is resolved through legal means.

This step addresses the ongoing dispute between the two regional governments and ensures the electoral process proceeds appropriately. The Board is expected to release a detailed list of the districts and stations soon.
