Explosion in Monaco injures three members of Ukrainian family

A strong explosion occurred Monday evening in a residential building in Monaco, injuring three members of the same Ukrainian family including an oligarch. A suspect fled after dropping a backpack at the entrance.

The explosion happened just before 9 p.m. on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla near Place des Moulins and the French border. The Monegasque government reported at least three injured, including two in absolute emergency with life-threatening prognosis. The victims are parents in their fifties and their 13-year-old son, all from the same Ukrainian family. One parent is oligarch Vadim Ermolaev, a VIP refugee in Monaco since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The three injured were taken to Nice: the two adults to CHU Pasteur and the teenager to Lenval Hospital. Four others received treatment for shock or cuts from blown-out windows. Government chief Christophe Mirmand described the event as « vraisemblablement un attentat ». The device likely contained bolts and shot.

A man was caught on CCTV dropping the backpack before fleeing on foot toward Beausoleil. The Red Plan was activated, deploying about fifty firefighters including ten from France and 84 public safety officers. Checks were set up at the border. Nice mayor Éric Ciotti called it a « tragédie » and expressed solidarity.
