Farmer and worker groups to intensify protests against Centre policies

A joint convention of farmer and worker organisations in New Delhi decided on July 29, 2026, to strengthen protests against the central government's labour and farm policies.

The National Convention of Workers and Farmers, organised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and Central Trade Unions, marked the second such meeting after August 2023. Participants resolved to extend solidarity with students and youth protesting the National Education Policy, 2020, and to organise coordinated programmes.

A resolution adopted at the convention stated that the government pursues policies favouring big corporates while inequalities grow. It noted that four labour codes were notified despite six general strikes in six years, measures that weaken unions.

The meeting criticised proposed trade deals with the United States and European Union for harming agriculture and micro, small and medium enterprises. It demanded repeal of the labour codes, legalisation of minimum support price as per the M.S. Swaminathan Commission, and an end to privatisation of public sector units.
