Fire breaks out at Hong Kong columbarium, injuring two people

A fire at Diamond Hill Columbarium in Hong Kong on Sunday injured a 53-year-old man surnamed Wong and his 32-year-old son with burns from falling ashes. Police preliminary investigation found the blaze caused by an overheated exhaust fan connected to a joss paper burner. Firefighters extinguished the No 1 alarm fire promptly.

Police said they received a report at 11.37am on Sunday of a fire at Diamond Hill Columbarium. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames, which were classified as a No 1 alarm fire, the lowest in Hong Kong’s five-tier system.

A preliminary investigation found the fire caused by an overheated exhaust fan connected to a joss paper burner, with heavy use leading to ashes flying.

The falling ashes injured a 53-year-old man surnamed Wong and his 32-year-old son, who both sustained burns on their necks and backs. They were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters battling Hong Kong’s deadliest inferno in decades prioritized controlling the blaze over evacuating residents due to its unprecedented scale, a public inquiry has heard. Four Fire Services Department officers testified on Monday about the initial stages of the 43-hour fire that ravaged Wang Fuk Court in November. Commander Raymond Wong King-man stated, “If you cannot put out the fire, how can you save those trapped inside?”
